Position within the organisation

 

The Master must give account to the Fleet Manager.The Master is the ship's master on board of a sea-going ship and is the representative of the shipping company.

The Master manages the deck department, facilities management department and has frequent work consultations with the engine room department.

The Master must solve and guide problems in accordance with his own judgement

 

Contacts

 

Internal


The Master keeps day-to-day contact with the departments within the shipping company.
The Master keeps (day-to-day) contact with all crew.

 

External


The Master keeps contact with shipping agencies (every port).
The Master keeps contact with customs (every port).
The Master keeps contact with sea and port pilots (every port).
The Master keeps contact with port authorities, including port service, port police, dangerous substances inspectorate (every port).
The Master keeps contact with suppliers of provisions and stores (monthly).
The Master keeps contact with service engineers for amongst others nautical instruments, deck equipment, tankage gauges etc. (weekly to monthly).
The Master keeps contact with the Port State Control (regularly).
The Master keeps contact with the Shipping Inspectorate or classification bureaus (annually and if required more frequently).
The Master keeps contact with auditors of the safety and quality system (annually).

 

Summary of the activities


The Master is responsible for a good economie and safe operational management.
The Master is responsible for the compliance with and execution of the national and international legislation.
The Master manages the operational state of affairs on board, at sea and in port.
The Master is responsible for the navigation, seaworthiness and safety of the ship and equipment.
The Master is responsible for the registration and reporting of any damages to the ship, load and/or third parties.
The Master is responsible for the communication of the ship with the shore.
The Master is responsible for the execution of and supervision on the compliance with the environment, safety and quality system.
The Master sees to it that the ship is in an excellent state of repair and regularly inspects the ship's quarters, storages, galley, refrigerators and freezers, engine room, etc.
The Master is responsible for the administration of the ship, including filing.
The Master draws up voyage preparations, determines the voyage plan and instructs the crew thereupon.
The Master determines the required bunkers in consultation with the involved departments.
The Master manages the execution of the policy and guidelines of the shipping company.
The Master checks the working list of the deck department, facilities management department, and engine room department and daily signs the ship's log, radio journal and cargo record book.
The Master draws up a shipyard repairs list in consultation with the deck and engine room departments.
The Master draws up assessments of the crew by order of the Human Resources department.
The Master is responsible for the general management in the event of calamities.
The Master is the person ultimately responsible for the application of safe working methods with reference to mankind and environment in conformity with the applicable instructions.

 

Knowledge


The Master is in the possession of the required diplomas as stipulated in the "Zeevaartbemanningswet" (Dutch Merchant Marine Qualifications Act.)
The Master is in the possession of a radar observer and radar navigator diploma.
The Master is in the possession of the Medical Care on Board Ships certificate.
The Master is in the possession of the GMDSS general radio operator certificate (Marcom-A).
The Master is in the possession of the certificate of competency.
The Master is in the possession of the certificate operational safety with regards to chemicais.
The Master is in the possession of the Advanced Fire Fighting certificate.
The Master must have the required knowledge of relevant computer systems, insofar applicable onboard.
The Master must have the knowledge and understanding of safe working methods with regards to man kind and environment and the applicable instructions.

 

Independence


The Master must be capable of operating independently under all circumstances.

 

Other skills


The Master must remain calm and professional under all circumstances.
The Master must deal with the interests of the crew in a confidential and responsible manner.
The Master must act in such a manner that the most advantageous result is achieved from the operational management.
The Master must have specialist knowledge of transport, processing, tank c1eaning activities of chemical and oil-bearing products.
The Master must be representative, whereby the interests of the shipping company are guiding.
The Master must be alert at all times and must be capable of improvising considering the continuously changing circumstances on board of a ship.
The Master must have excellent writing and oral ski lis.
The Master must be capable of keeping a clear administration.
